From Generation to Generation: The Legacy of Faith in the Scriptures

Intergenerational Life In the Scriptures, Part 1
Intergenerational Life In the Scriptures, Part 2

Pastor Paul Pettersen

In this two-week series we will look at the ways that faith is handed from one generation to the next. We will engage all ages in the learning, drawing together our elders, middlers, youth and children. What happened in the prodigal son when his father threw his arms around him and kissed him? As Isaac laid his hands on Jacob, what did the Holy Spirit convey? In the spoken and the unspoken, in the touches of grace ... faith happens!”

Wine, Water Jars, and Witness: Getting to Know the Gospel of John

Dr. Karoline Lewis
October 23–November 13

What is the unique story of Jesus that the Gospel of John has to tell us and why does it matter? We hear from John here and there, but the Fourth Gospel does not have its own year in our lectionary readings. This course covers the "Johannine Basics" so that when Sunday's Gospel is from John, we have a better appreciation for its distinctive voice and understanding of its presentation of Jesus.

The Psalms: God's Soundtrack for the Life of Faith

Dr. Rolf Jacobson
September 18–October 16

The Eighth year of The Orchard began with the series “The Psalms, God’s Soundtrack for a Life of Faith” led by Dr. Rolf Jacobson, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary. We see “the Psalms as the musical soundtrack that God gives us to learn on Sunday mornings, to take out and have it playing along with the actual events of our lives.” How fortunate we are at Normandale to sing the Psalms every Sunday in worship.

In his first of five lectures, Dr. Jacobson took us through the Psalms of Praise. Praise is testimony of who God is. It tells us what God has done. In praise we give ourselves to God. We studied two Praise Psalms and focused on the key verse of each one: “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 100) and “Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever” (Psalm 145). We also sang the hymns that closely matched those Psalms: All People Who on Earth Do Dwell, and How Great Thou Art.

Following Scripture in the Age of Science

  • Dr. Alan Padgett
Professor of Systematic Theology at Luther Seminary

Dr. Alan Padgett led our spring session of The Orchard with three lectures on the Bible and Science.

He will help us understand how the Bible and science address the big questions of our lives and whether there is any conflict between the two. Dr. Padgett “considers the disciplines of science and theology to be ‘colleagues’ that should work together. ‘God made two books, ‘the Scriptures and the book of nature. Both are ways to the truth of God.’” (Luther Seminary author profile)

Portraits of the Passion

Five Sundays Beginning February 6, 2011 with Dr. David Lose 9:45 am in Fellowship Hall

”As noted in recent bestsellers like Jesus, Interrupted and Misquoting Jesus, at points the four gospels offer strikingly different portrayals of Jesus. This is no where more evident than in their distinct descriptions of the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion.

Should we be troubled or informed by these differences?
Why did the early Church include such varied portraits?
What can we learn about Jesus by paying attention to them?

Join Professor David Lose of Luther Seminary for a lively investigation and discussion of these and other questions as we consider the variety and unity of the biblical accounts of our Lord’s passion.” From Dr. Lose.
