Pastor Paul Pettersen to be Installed in Worship on Sunday, September 26 / 8:30 & 11:00 am

You may have installed a screen door or perhaps a new appliance in your kitchen. Very likely you’ve installed new batteries in a handheld device or possibly a window that needed replacing. To install is to fit together for good purpose, use and function. With that, we will be installing a new pastor at Normandale on Sunday, September 26 in worship, not because anything was broken or even needed replacing. We will be installing, because pastors need to be connected, intimately entwined with God and congregation. We install, because God sees fit to bring us together, closely called in communion with our Lord, Jesus Christ, tightly fit to work together for the kingdom.

Please come celebrate the growing relationship we have as a people of God, knit together by the Holy Spirit. Pastor Paul appreciates your prayers and welcomes the laying on of hands for the power of God given. Dr. Edward Lindell and Dr. Lloyd Svendsbye will be presiding over the installation.

Hymn Sing and Augustana Service

On Sunday, September 26 at 2:30 pm, Jack Swanson will lead a hymn sing from our special Augustana Synod Hymnal of all those good hymns that are so enjoyable to hear.

This is the 60th anniversary of our congregation’s founding in the Augustana Synod, so it is especially appropriate that, at the service which follows, we will worship with the service setting of the Augustana liturgy. In the pulpit preaching will Pastor Bill Berg, who is 100 years old, also making this day noteworthy.

After the service, follow the aroma of coffee and cardamom down to Fellowship Hall for a time of socializing with friends and honoring past workers.

Facing Forward

Early on in my time at Normandale, I had the privilege of a visit with Pastor Carl and Mim Manfred. Carl served as Pastor here at Normandale in the late 70’s and early 80’s, while Mim has adorned the congregation with her piano music still to this day. Carl gave me a gift, a book of his authoring which captured the history of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America , from 1963-1987. Carl provided this work at the request of then Bishop Herb Chilstrom, former Minnesota Synod LCA Bishop and then the first Bishop of the newly formed Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

On the dedications page of his work, Carl devoted one side “To Mim” and the other side to a poem by Pastor Judy Mattison, entitled, “Facing Forward.” I now share it with you.

Facing Forward
We turn our faces forward now looking to a new church.
We have not abandoned who we were nor forgotten where we have been.
But life requires change and the Spirit will not be still as long as creation lives.
We are called to change and grow and move among others.
New, carrying in us the timeless message that the Alpha, the Omega
surrounds us and goes with us.
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.
Let us go forward.

Dr. Paul Sponheim, professor of systematic theology at Luther Seminary, once said, “God must really like change, because He sure created a lot of it.” As God continues to create the world, seeking to shape a kingdom according to Christ, we are called to be willing participants in the change and growth. It is not ours to resist the Spirit, but only to move with it, offering the best of our “co-creative” abilities…and God is served!

We are blessed at Normandale Lutheran Church. We have 60 years of faithful history, with a beautiful stream of saints who surround us with love. We have a legacy of powerful ministry both within and without. We have partnerships all over the world with God’s people of every color. We have elders of wisdom and children of zeal. We have women of devotion and men of faith. We have leaders with experience and followers with humility. We have hearts of generosity and spirits of fire. We have the love of Jesus deep within and the hands of servants ready to work.

As we face forward together, our eyes set like flints toward the kingdom of God, we go with confidence, trusting our God in Jesus Christ who has brought us this far by faith. God planted a vision in the community of Edina sixty years ago and the people said, “YES!” And I can’t wait to see what our next “YES” will bring.

Peace
Pastor Paul
