Safeguarding God’s Children

Normandale Council and Staff in partnership over the last six months have found benefit in identifying and understanding specific safety practices to be in alignment with our society and the world around us. The safety and security practices identified are intended to help us provide a safe environment for Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Adults, which is part of our Christian call in the mission we share. Those practices were adopted by the Church Council in June as the Safety and Security Policy of Normandale Lutheran Church.

Why is a safety and security policy necessary?

  • To affirm and protect children, youth, and vulnerable adults
  • To affirm and protect volunteers and staff
  • To raise awareness
  • To be a leader and advocate in our community
  • To affirm and protect Normandale Lutheran Church

How will we practice safety and security at Normandale?

Volunteer Screening
Background checks will be required for all volunteers and staff, 18 years and older, working with children, youth, or vulnerable adults.

Driver’s Checks
Driver’s checks will be needed for all transporting children, youth, or vulnerable adults.

Sign-in and Sign-out
All families participating in ministry experiences will need to provide registration and contact information, and participate in the sign-in/sign-out processes to safeguard children as they come and go.

Education
Ongoing Safety and Security training will be scheduled for all volunteering with children, youth, or vulnerable adults to teach and affirm best practices in all areas.

Beginning in Fall 2010, first steps will be taken to put best practices into place. As you become involved in ministry, particularly with children, youth, or vulnerable adults, you will be asked to take steps to help us create an environment where safety practices are affirmed and utilized. If you have questions or need information, contact the staff member where you connect or volunteer so that you can find answers and understanding in this process.

The provider for background and driver’s checks is Protect My Ministry at www.protectmyministry.com. All checks will be done online directly with Protect My Ministry and it is only necessary for a person to do this once every three years. Using Protect My Ministry accomplishes several things: Easy and accessible—All checks are done online with Protect My Ministry and can be done from home.
