Step Forward & Engage: In LifeCare
We are here to care for each other and we believe God’s loving presence is experienced through people caring for one another.
Volunteers and our NLC Parish Nurse visit those who have recently moved to a different home or other living facility. These short informal visits include prayers, blessings, and refreshments.
A community of people who pray daily for the needs of anyone who has requested prayers.
Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one caring ministry providing high quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. Stephen Ministers receive fifty hours of extensive training in distinctively Christian care for people experiencing a life crisis. They study and practice skills in areas including emotional crisis, crisis intervention, listening, and confidentiality.
Friends Card Project
Love sending cards and notes? We send hand-written birthday cards and holiday cards to members over age 79. If you enjoy sending notes and caring for others in this way, please join us in this card project!
Knitted Hats & Scarves
Hats and scarves are knitted throughout the year and given at Christmas to partner outreach programs. Patterns and donated yarn are available at NLC!
Prayer Shawls are created by NLC knitters who weave their prayers for God’s love and for healing of body, mind, and spirit. Prayer shawls are provided to people experiencing difficult times: illness, surgery, personal crisis, loss, and other challenging circumstances.
Sew Day / Mission Quilts
Do you love to quilt? Would you like to learn? Donated fabric, sheets, and blankets are used to create mission quilts for Lutheran World Relief (LWR) , Community Emergency Service (CES), and Normandale Housing. Quilters meet Mondays twice a month to create these beautiful art blankets.
LifeCare Leadership, Development, and Support
NLC currently hosts and participates in the Edina Coalition for Grief Support and we have previously hosted and led DivorceCare small groups. We are looking to expand LifeCare at NLC. If you have a passion for this ministry, please join us in caring for each other through these opportunities.
Step Forward & Engage: In Special Service Events
NLC has "adopted" a section of Highway 62 between Highway 100 and Gleason Road. We clean this section of the highway twice a year. Help keep our world beautiful!
NormandaleServes and More!
Each fall, NLC helps others in the surrounding community with leaf raking and fall yard clean-up. This service event and others need both willing participants and special planning teams.
Are you handy? Do you love working on house projects? NLC has a team of handy and talented individuals, the Holy Hammers, who help others with home projects. This team is led by Jack Kemme and is seeking additional handy individuals. Questions? Contact Jack Kemme at email@example.com.
Step Forward & Engage: In Administrative Congregational Care
The NLC Archives Committee organizes and helps to document and preserve church records and items pertinent to the preservation of NLC’s church history.
Each Friday afternoon a team of individuals comes into the office to stuff bulletins for the upcoming Sunday morning worship services. The work is light and no prior experience is necessary!
NLC has two teams of "counters" who count the offering weekly in the church office. Teams are made up of 4-5 members who total and account for our Sunday offerings.
Wednesday helpers come in on Wednesday mornings and help with a variety of tasks as needed, including Sunday School prep and other office and adminstrative tasks. The volunteer work is light and includes social time and coffee!
Step Forward & Engage: In Mission
Normandale Housing Ministry
Through Normandale Housing Ministry, we assist, empower, and partner with families seeking transition from homelessness to independent living. Using a holistic model and partnerships, we provide housing, support services, and education.
Reading Buddies: Reading Buddies is a weekly Monday evening literacy and homework help program for kids living in Normandale House and Elliott Avenue housing. Reading Buddies is led by youth (grades 7-12) from NLC. Join us as we spend time eating, reading, and making kids smile! If you are interested in participating, we ask that you commit to participating at least once a month.
Reading Buddies (provide dinner): Each Monday night, Reading Buddies and students share a meal together. Help us provide and prepare meals for 20 kids and family members. Meals may be pre-made and dropped off at church.
Support Teams: Support teams are trained and experienced people who meet regularly with residents. The teams coach residents in life skills by setting goals, tracking progress, solving problems, and celebrating successes together.
Apartment Turnover Helpers: Handy with a paint brush? Ready to get your hands dirty? Between resident families, we clean, furnish, and fix up each apartment. Volunteers of all ages and skills are encouraged to join us as we help make each apartment a home, ready to welcome a new family!
Furniture-Moving Helpers & Transportation: As we furnish apartments and prepare them for new families, larger vehicles and muscles are helpful when we're moving furniture!
Norma's Closet (household supplies): Many families cannot afford to buy cleaning supplies, children's medications, bathroom essentials, and more as they are not covered by food stamps/SNAP. Help us fill Norma's Closet! It is located in the lower level of Normandale Lutheran Church, near the preschool entrance.
Mission Peru Task Force
Mission Peru welcomes anyone wanting to learn about and support our mission to Huch’uy Runa, a school for Quechua orphans in Cusco, Peru. A Mission Exposure / Vision Trip occurs every two years.
Mission India Task Force
NLC has joined The North Western Gossner Evangelical Lutheran Church (NWGELC) in developing a vision of congregation-based community health care. NLC’s connections will continue with face-to-face visits to support our partners and friends in India.
Normandale Center for Healing & Wholeness
The Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness serves over 500 older persons and family members each year, providing support services and assistance to elders and family members or friends helping an older person. Consider being part of a relationship-based Volunteer Team, a Driver, or Volunteer at a Senior Housing Campus. A volunteer orientation training session at the Normandale Center for Healing & Wholeness and a meeting with Marta Volbrecht, the Center's Volunteer Coordinator, will help you discern where your interests and gifts intersect with the needs of participating elders and families; the Center will match interests and needs and will provide ongoing monitoring and support. For more information about volunteer opportunities, click here or contact Marta Volbrecht, Volunteer Coordinator, at 952.977.9365.
NLC supports Jim & Carol Sack in Japan, and Neeraj & Nijhar Ekka in India. Our pledged support is $120 per week, generously given through $30 from four persons / families weekly.
Sending Forth (Seminarian support)
Sending Forth supports future church leaders while in seminary.
